Five Ways to Celebrate International Literacy Day

Reading has been one of the biggest joys in my life and I am grateful I've always had access to books. There is something so important about the smell, the texture, the portability, the pleasure of holding a book, being able to read it, and immerse oneself in adventures, mythologies, shared knowledge and wisdom, and other amazing worlds.

Sadly, there are so many children and adults who haven't been introduced to reading. Grammarly has gathered the latest literacy statistics to raise awareness of this global problem, as seen in their infographic below.

I've always been a fan of Grammarly as I use their product to help with my writing. I'm an even bigger fan now that I've discovered that part of their literacy campaign includes donating to such worthy causes as  Reading is Fundamental, First Book, and Pro Literacy

To follow today's theme I've put together the following five ideas to help celebrate International Literacy Day:

1) Encourage a literary rich environment at home: turn off the tv and video games, stock your bookshelves with books, encourage read-alongs and read-alouds. Make reading an integral part of your day.

2) Donate to a worthy literacy cause: Whether it is time, money, or books there is always a need in every community for volunteers to help with literacy programs. Does your community have an adult literacy program? Helping a person learn how to read is a valuable gift.

3) Create a Twitter hashtag for sharing books: Have you read a good book lately? Share it! Gift it! Review it! Spread the love of reading.

4) Do you have time to spare? : Volunteer doing readings at your local library. Your librarian will love you for it!

5) Donate your gently used books to groups in your area that raise money for literacy awareness and support.

Whenever you read a good book, somewhere in the world a door opens to allow in more light.
